Three Time West Halton Champions in the 2010s

The basketball program at John T Tuck has four components, the Junior Basketball teams, the Basketball Club, the Senior Basketball teams, and the alumni games.  Information for all four of these (boys teams only) can be found below.

Alumni Games

Once or twice a month, after school, I open the gym to welcome back former Tuck players from all of the teams I have coached.  We play pick up style ball for a couple hours, and reminisce about our years together at Tuck.  If you played for me in the past, feel free to sign up on the Alumni Blog.  Whenever there will be a game I post on there, the blog then sends out an e-mail to all members to inform them of the time.

The Senior Boys Basketball Team

The Senior basketball team is a competitive team that plays in the Halton Basketball League.  The team is formed on a try-out basis, and only 12 students will be chosen to participate.  The team will have a minimum of four practises a week, both before and after school.  Any player who wishes to be part of the team will need to commit to these times.

Try-outs for the senior team will occur in early December.  However, it is strongly recommended that anyone interested in trying out play at basketball club starting in September, as those who do will develop their skills prior to try-outs.

Basketball Club

The basketball club at Tuck is open to boys and girls in grades 7 and 8, regardless of basketball knowledge or skill.  Any student in these grades is welcome to join and participate.

When students enter the gym teams are formed simply by lining up along the side wall, we play in groups of five based on when we arrive.  This allows for a variety of skill levels to play on one team.  We then play full court, 5-on-5 basketball.  The games last only until a single basket is scored.  This helps us to promote the importance of defense and teamwork, it also allows for more games to be played, and shorter stints on the bench.

Basketball club is run using the Japanese senpai-kouhai philosophy.  Grade 8 basketball team members will take a leadership role, helping to develop younger, less experienced players.  The grade 7 students, or grade 8s who have not played before, are expected to respect this leadership role, and use it as an opportunity to improve their skills, while getting exercise and having a great time.

Basketball club runs three times per week:

  • Monday, second break, grade 7s and 8s

  • Wednesday, second break, grade 8s (once team is formed this changes to team only)

  • Friday, second break, grade 7s and 8s

The Junior basketball team is a competitive team that plays in a variety of tournaments and exhibition games.  The team is formed on a try-out basis, and only 12 students will be chosen to participate.  The team will have a minimum of three practises a week, both before and after school.  Any player who wishes to be part of the team will need to commit to these times.

Try-outs for the junior team normally occur in mid April.
